The first thriller opening sequence we watched was north by northwest, Hitchcock was the director of this film and he also appears in the film. He has used enigma to add suspense to the opening of the thriller. Hitchcock has used an effect of lines and blinds in the opening sequence to add an trap feeling before you have even started the film to make the viewers have an nervous feeling about the beginning of the film. In the opening sequence he has used mirrors so the viewers can see everyone in the scene and what they are doing in the scene. He has also used mirrors to see face expressions of all the actors, also by using the mirror in a thriller opening it allows the viewers to see if the actors are being two faced.
As the opening credits came up on the screen there was a use of the colour red this could show many things such as evil, passion or even danger. so as the colour credits come up along the screen the viewers can be thinking of many things which could could happen during the film.
The second opening sequence to a thriller was Marnie which is also directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1964. the first thing that we saw the in the film was the opening credits which came up in a book like style with turning pages for each credit. The opening sequence begins with anxious music by the use of violins, the music then slows down to a romantic type of music when the final few credits appear on the screen. In the first scene that we see there is an extreme close up of a bright yellow bag which makes the viewers start asking questions from the very beginning, like why an extreme close up and why is it bright yellow. This close up shows that the bag may well be an significant feature in this film. There is an tracking shot of the women who is carrying the yellow bag walking on a white line along the train station, at this stage the only sound that we hear is her heels walking along the concrete. At this stage of the film we still haven't seen the women's face, but we can now see the women full length and she is wearing gloves and is carrying a suitcase in there right hand, this make the viewers ask questions again because why is she carrying a suitcase? and why is she at the train station? and why is she wearing gloves because the background of this scene shows blue skies which shows its hot so why is she wearing gloves, there could be may reasons why is she wearing gloves but the one that came into my head first was that she didn't want to get any finger prints on anything that she is handling. The film then cuts to a man in an office talking to the police and giving a detailed description of a women. As the man is giving the description of the women we seem to build a picture that he knows everything about her which suggests that he fancies her but has got know where with her. There is an reverse shot in the office to show the police taking notes about what the man is saying and their reaction of the detailed description which they are being told. The film then cuts back to an second close up off the bag which gives a better picture that the bag is a significant in this film. There is another cut shot back to the office where there is an close up of an empty shelves in the safe with fills the screen so everyone has the picture that something has gone missing from the safe and that is why the police are there and the man is giving a detailed description of a women. The film then goes back to the women who was carrying the yellow bag but this time she is an hotel with a load of shopping which she needs help carrying from a men working in the hotel. We then go into the hotel room and on the bed is two suitcase, she is chucking clothes into the left hand suitcase and folding and placing clothes into the right hand suitcase. Still at this point of the film we haven't seen the women's face which creates more suspense to the opening sequence. We then find out that the women has stolen the money as she empties the yellow bag into the right hand side suitcase. She then discards her idenity and gets another idenity card out of an wallet she has several in there. The music has increased and has got tenser as the womens face is finally revealed, and as she washes the hair dye out and is left with her natural blonde hair colour. We then see the women back at the station. She is carrying both suitcases but puts the left hand suitcase into a locker in the station, she locks the locker and looks around. There is an close up of her hand with the key in it so we know that she is going to do something with it but we are not sure. Then she sees a drain and slowly walks over it to and drops the key onto the drain and kicks it down.
The third thriller opening sequence we watched was Defence of the Realm this was directed by David Drury in 1985. At the beginning of the film we hear a radio clip which someone who is reading a newspaper report but he stumbles on it as its such a big story. The newspaper report states that there a possible member of parliament who may be a spy. There is an diagetic sound which is mixed with an non-diagetic sound which makes a good contrast in an opening sequence of a thriller as it creates suspense to the beginning. There is a close up of a piece of paper which we can read clearly as there is a torch shining over it as this part of the film is filmed at night. There has been photos passed between two men which shows that the people in the photos play a significant role in this film. There is a cut shot to a different location where the man who has got the photos see the people in the phots and start taking more photos off them together, the only things we hear at this point is clicking of the camera this adds suspense to the opening sequence. The only fault with this film is that there is to much dialog involved.
The firth thriller opening we watched was the third man which was directed by Carol Reed in 1949. At the beginning of the film there is the use of lines which begin to change into blinds when all the credits have appeared on the screen. When this has happened the lines and blinds start to dissolve to form a picture of the location which the film is set in. The man that we see first seems to have a smiley and postive attitude. There is a bright light outside which creates suspense as we dont know what is going to happen. There is a churry soundtrack which makes the beginning of the film have a postive feel, but by having the chruppy soundtrack it can also add suspense to the beginning of the thriller. Most of the shots in this film are at an angle which makes the viewers fell disorientated as nothing is that the same angle, we can see this particularly on a shot of a door as its not straight and is on an angle. We then see a women running down a alley way which as suspense as we dont know what she is running from and all you can hear is the echo from the womens feet on the ground.
The final thriller opening sequence we watched was se7en which is directored by Dvid Fincher in 1995. The film is about two police officers and one new one and one which is about to retire, the film is based around the seven deaily sins. In the opening to the thriller they have used a flash device to show different parts of the film in one go and has an positive effect on the viewers. Also the producers have used a many colours to create suspense to the film so knowone really knows what is about to happen.
